The Canucks announced that they have signed free agent center Dane Fox to a contract today. Before you dismiss this as insignificant news because you’ve never heard of him, take a look at his numbers.

Season Team League GP G A Pts
2009-10 London OHL 26 1 6 7
2010-11 London OHL 51 11 12 23
2011-12 London/Erie OHL 62 23 31 54
2012-13 Erie OHL 37 19 17 36
2013-14 Erie OHL 35 41 26 67

Fox’s stats are eye popping. He’s leading the OHL in goals and is second in points as an over-aged player this season. He has 41 goals in only 35 games! That has me thinking that the Canucks may have found a diamond in the rough.

Of course, over-aged players like Fox have come around before. There is a long list of over-aged junior players that put up spectacular numbers as a 20 year old but fail to make an impact in the NHL, so maybe I need to calm down. But Canucks fans don’t need to look far for examples of undrafted late bloomers to make an impact in the NHL (Burrows, Tanev, etc).

Will Fox be Martin St Louis or Fabien Brunnstrom? We will soon find out.
