Why we hate. An ongoing series analyzing the teams, players, and things that piss Canucks fans off the most. First up: the Boston Bruins.
In 1986 the Canucks traded Cam Neely and a first round draft pick (Glen Wesley) for Barry Pederson. This move has proven to be arguably the worst trade in Canucks history.
In 108 contests leading up to the 2011 Stanley cup finals series, the Canucks record against the Bruins was 25-66-15-2.
I’m sure no one among us needs reminding of the recent history between the Canucks and Bruins. The 2011 series was the first ever playoff meeting between the two teams, and very quickly turned nasty, both on and off the ice. In Game one, Alex Burrows (allegedly) bit Patrice Burgeron’s finger, though I still believe that Burrows was simply trying to dislodge some cheese curds which had become trapped in his palate whilst he was eating his traditional pre-game poutine. Adding fuel to the fire, Burrows went on to rack up 3 points in game 2, including the overtime winner.
Infuriated Bruins fans berated and assaulted visiting Canucks fans for the remainder of the series.
Bruins fans simply refused to let go of “bite-gate”, and used the incident as a rallying cry.
Bruins players taunted Burrows remorselessly about the incident, and created a trend of shoving fingers in mouths which spilled over into the stands.
Apparently to Bruins fans such behavior was justified across the board, including middle aged women, as illustrated in this story.
In Game 3, Aaron Rome made a clean hit on Nathan Horton (well, it was a tad late), who forgot rule #1 for playing at the NHL level – keep your head up. Rome was subsequently given a five minute major and a suspension.
The Bruins players basically spent the rest of the series playing and acting like assholes, and were allowed to take major liberties while the refs looked the other way.
I can’t remember how the rest of that series went, because I was too angry. I’m assuming the Canucks players had a similar reaction, since I haven’t seen the Stanley Cup banner hanging in our stadium yet. Maybe it’s still getting made.
Whatever the case, those guys are a bunch of jerks, and no love has been lost.
*pay close attention to the commentary from the Bruins colour man
Who we Hate:
1) Brad Marchand- infuriating little pest
2) Milan Lucic- Homegrown lummox
3) Tim Thomas- I know he has faded into hockey obscurity, but we can never forgive or forget that smug, playoff-bearded shit eating grin of his.
What Bruins fans have to say:
Here is a mini-interview I had with Scott and Steve, a couple lifelong Bruins fans I know. Both grew up in the Maritimes and claim that since they were forced to watch Bruins games growing up (Bruins feeds being the only ones available in the Maritimes at the time), becoming Bruins fans made sense. This in spite of the fact that both Scott and Steve have both lived in Vancouver for over a decade. Get it together, you stubborn assholes!
Stu- Who is your Favourite Bruin of all time?
Scott- My favorite Bruin of all time is the best ALL AROUND PLAYER EVER #8 CAM NEELY. 50 goals in 50 games!!
Steve- Bobby Orr
Stu- What irritates you most about Canucks fans?
Scott- Canucks fans? Well, a lot of them are just that! Canucks fans not hockey fans!
Stu- what does that mean?
Scott- They cheer for the Canucks but they don’t know a lot about hockey and they could give a rats ass about the rest of the league
Steve- the “Loooo” posts in sports groups followed by no substantial grasp of any humility…an average Nucks fan cannot engage in rational dialect about hockey or anything outside the one dimension of their team… they have no humility
Scott- They seem to have a chip on their shoulder and are a bit arrogant. Kinda like Habs fans!!!
Stu- Any words for the Canucks Nation leading up to the Canucks/Bruins game on the 14th?
Steve- Bring it don’t sing it n’ sorry but yer “travel schedule” boo hoo shite won’t apply n’ I’m already hearing “I wish we didn’t have a game the night before” excuses.
Scott- Yeah I’m stoked for this game !! I’ve got tickets and can’t wait !!! And don’t poke the bear !!!
***Note: If you are at this game, and happen to see a 6 foot 5 guy named Scott in a Bruins jersey, feel free to explain to him all the reasons why Cam Neely is, in fact, NOT “the best all around player ever”…
