Canucks add 3 new players, return Horvat and Shinkaruk back to junior

The Bo Horvat-Hunter Shinkaruk era has come to an end 9 games faster than anyone expected.

Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk were sent back to Junior yesterday and today respectively.  The Canucks picked up Jeremy Welsh and Zac Dalpe in trade from the Carolina Hurricanes as well as claiming Ryan Stanton off the waiver wire from the Chicago Blackhawks.  The writing was on the wall for Horvat and Shinkaruk as the Canucks had to get down to 23 players by today.  While many fans were itching to see Horvat and Shinkaruk at least short-term in Canucks’ colours, the Canucks made the right call on this one as neither player was ready to make the big leap.

So who are these new Canucks?

Zac Dalpe

Zac Dalpe is a 23 year old centre/right winger that the Canucks feel can fill a centre spot on one of the bottom two lines.  Mike Gillis has gone on record as saying that the Canucks have been following Dalpe’s career closely.  Dalpe has a very friendly cap hit of $550,000 and is likely to get a much longer look with the Canucks at the NHL level than he received with the Hurricanes.  The 6’1″, 195 lb, former Ohio State Buckeye managed to see action in only 31 NHL games over the last 3 season with the Hurricanes.

Jeremy Welsh

Jeremy Welsh is a 25 year old centre that was sent to Canucks AHL affiliate, Utica Comets, earlier today.  The Canucks had interest in Welsh two years ago when trying to sign him as a free agent coming out of Union College.  Welsh was more or less a salary dump on the part of the Hurricanes.  Welsh is on a $1,000,000 one-way deal and the Hurricanes had no interest in paying that type of money to a player destined for another year in the AHL.  Welsh adds depth to the system and another option for the Canucks if they were to run into injury trouble down the middle.

Ryan Stanton

Ryan Stanton is a waiver wire pickup from the ‘Hawks by the Canucks.  Stanton posted decent numbers (25 pts, 126 PIMS, +16 in 73 games) last year with Rockford of the AHL.  The 6’2″, 200lb Defensemen is added depth for the Canucks.  Stanton has another cap-friendly contract with a $550,000 salary.  Look for the Canucks to send Stanton down to Utica in 30 days (the Canucks have to keep him on the NHL roster for at least 30 days after picking him up off waivers).
