Tonight at the Vancouver Canucks Summer Summit, Mike Gillis fielded questions from seasons ticket holders. He deflected questions regarding UFA defenceman Justin Schultz and the inevitable trade of the best goalie this franchise has ever seen. What seemed to catch everyone off guard was the announcement that the Canucks and RFA goalie Cory Schneider had agreed to a deal “in principle”. Gillis wouldn’t elaborate any further, but said “more news in the few days”.
Interesting that this comes out as it did, when it did, especially since earlier this week Schneider’s agent Mike Luit said he had stopped taking calls regarding the matter. Schneider himself said he was also in no hurry to have a deal done, saying he was confident he would have a contract sooner or later.
It was later tweeted by Sportsnet analyst Nick Kypreos that Schneider and the Canucks had agreed on a three year, $12 million dollar contract.
News of the signing has increased speculation that Roberto Luongo is on his way out of Vancouver. Of course, at this point, that’s not speculation, it’s pretty much common knowledge.
