Random trade deadline thoughts

It’s 11:30pm, the night before the trade deadline and I’m doing what you may be doing right now, trying to cook up scenarios in which the Canucks acquire something significant before the noon (Pacific time) deadline. I’m not going to go into any great detail on these guys (I get into a lot more detail in my other trade propositions), but most of them are upcoming unrestricted free agents or on teams that are likely to be unloading talent. The Canucks aren’t likely to trade away roster players, so lets assume that the Canucks are willing to give up draft picks and prospects.

Who might the Canucks get?

Steve Ott

He was the talk of Twitter on Sunday. Jason Botchford has reported that the Canucks are pursuing him heavily. He’s not big, but he’s gritty and has some talent. He won the faceoff that led to the tying goal and setup the winning goal in overtime. The Canucks could use him on their fourth line, with the ability to play on other lines as well.

Vernon Fiddler

I’m not sure if Dallas wants to deal him or not, but he’s a character player. He’s the guy that got Bieksa and Vigneault cracking up on the bench, so that’s worth something isn’t it?

Paul Gaustad

Buffalo is sitting below the playoff bar at the moment, so they might want to get rid of Gaustad. Gaustad is huge, kills penalties and plays centre. He can also fight should the need arise.

David Jones

He has size and the ability to be a 20 goal scorer. He might be an upgrade on Mason Raymond.

Daniel Winnik

He’s big and strong and would be an upgrade on Dale Weiss on the fourth line.

Mark Streit

Jason Botchford tweeted that the Canucks were real interested in him but the Islanders didn’t want to part with him. I think it’s unlikely but he would be a real great addition if they could swing it. He’s great on the power play and can log a lot of minutes.

Rick Nash

Not gonna happen, and I don’t just mean to Vancouver. I bet he’ll get moved in the summer.

Samuel Pahlsson

At the Columbus fire sale, every UFA must go! Pahlsson has a Stanley Cup ring and is a checking centre. He’s getting up there in age, but maybe a trade to a contender would give him a boost in energy.

Derek Dorsett

He’s big and mean and can score the odd goal. I haven’t seen a lot of Blue Jackets games, I’m not going to lie, but Dorsett might be a fit on the fourth line or as an extra forward.

Grant Clitsome

He’s actually been put on waivers. Clitsome (giggle) is a defenceman who the Blue Jackets played upwards of 25 minutes a game as recently as October. You could get him for nothing, so maybe it’s something the Canucks consider.

Greg Zanon

A gritty defenceman with experience that’s also a local boy.

Clayton Stoner

Not only would it be awesome to have a guy with the last name ‘Stoner’ on the team, but he’s also from BC, plays defence and is 6’3″ and 220 lbs.

Mikael Samuelsson

What about re-acquiring Mikael Samuelsson? I know that Florida is in a playoff spot right now, but perhaps they feel that they don’t need Samuelsson. They just picked up Wolski, so maybe that’s so they can unload Samuelsson? Just a shot in the dark here.

Bryan Allen

Another former Canuck, he would be an upgrade on Andrew Alberts.

So there you have it. That’s a whole bunch of names, who may or may not be traded. At least I can’t be any less accurate than Eklund.
